Kavala and Drama: The Wine Route of Dionysus

In ancient times, Mount Pangeon, famous for its gold and silver mines, was the centre of Dionysian worship. According to the legend, this is where god Dionysus was raised and got the horses of King Lycourgos drunk with local wine.
Kavala and Drama region is on the wine route of Dionysus.

The vineyards of Drama and Kavala

The vineyards of Drama and Kavala relate to the production of high-quality wines and are the most significant viticulture regions of Greece. They boast several major and pioneering producers, who have created some of the most special and interesting Greek wines.

The exceptionally temperate and humid climate prevalent in Kavala´s valley and the hilly terrain undulating between the coastline and Mount Pangeon – together with the deep, fertile soil – provide the ideal place for the acclimatisation of the early harvest, foreign white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillion.

Northwest of Kavala, in Drama´s warmer and drier area, it is the international red varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah which have fared better alongside the native Assyrtiko.

These regions also produce exquisite wines made of the native Agiorgitiko, Assyrtiko, Malagousia and Xinomavro grape varietals.

Mostly linear and irrigated, the vineyards of Kavala and Drama are among the state-of-the-art and comprehensively organized vineyards in Greece.
